Notice about Old Site

When we migrated to this version of the site, I left the old version up for reference and archiving purposes in read only mode. I suspected that it would fail at some point, given database errors that had been accumulating, but it surprised me by staying functional all this time. However, given our current financial deficit, I've finally moved ahead with closing it down. For the next two months, the whateleyacademy.net URL will redirect to this site and then I do not plan to renew that domain name.  If there are any questions about this, please contact me on Discord and I'll give more info.

NOTE: while this reduces costs, it will NOT reduce them enough to drop below our current donation amounts. I still pay for a chunk of our costs out of pocket and considering my own budget is strained at this time; if you can afford to do so, please consider adding a small monthly donation to support the site.

Thanks!
Kristin

What about the comments that were only on that site? Will they be migrated or otherwise archived in an accessible format?

We've got all the stories as well as a back-up of the forums. If the comments were left on the story page I'm unsure if we were able to preserve those. They should have been pretty scant since the majority of people on the old site were using the forums and commenting there.

So no... I didn't make a dedicated effort to do any sort of backup of the comment system. Realistically, MOST of the old site is well covered by the regular backups done by archival sites like the Wayback Machine. For example: web.archive.org/web/20200807181047/http:...cademy.net/index.php ... and have no plan to implement any sort of accessible archive for that same reason, it's out there if you want it and it doesn't cost us anything to rely on it being there. While that's not the 'last' solid crawl the archive has of the site (we used the old site into Summer of 2021 I believe), it's close to the point where we started having database errors. If what you're looking for is from later than that you'll hace to poke through the later snapshots. From what I see there, the comments are intact on stories ... and the Feedback forums are accessible.

I DO have an external crawl archive of the forums and the WhatIF stories that I made for personal reference and a separate crawl of JUST the restricted forums (the Fabrication Lab for Worn Wrench members and the staff and canon sections) because those do NOT appear on normal unregistered site crawls like Wayback's... those are available 'as is' (well, maybe zipped to at least give it some organizational structure) to people who have a need and would have had (or currently have) access if the site were up. WhatIF authors can request the old Worn Wrench forums... authors can get the canon forums, etc.

No guarantees I will transfer the material quickly or in an easy to peruse format... I saved it in case of emergency, not because I thought it should be migrated. If someone wants to commit their own time to cleaning it up and putting it in an accessible format? That's fine... I simply don't have the mental fortitude to handle that particular bit of administrative hoop jumping at this time.
