a persistent material manifester.... the mass for the wool has to come from somewhere then
It does come from somewhere, but not from where you may be thinking. None of the manifestor ratings limit the mass that can be manifested, because the mutant can just go back and do it again and again, and again.

most manifestors produce temporary materials, from echtoplasma, that usually disappear after a certain amount of time, this keeps them from permanently violating the law of conservation of matter and energy, Ewe clearly is using a different mechanism to manifest wool.
edit the most obvious way for her to store the requisite mass is as milk...

the Definition of Manifestor is very liberal in the WU, Technically Lamprey's extra tongues are considered a manifestation, albeit a permanent one.a persistent material manifester.... the mass for the wool has to come from somewhere then, if i were to guess, she stores a LOT more of the mass from her food to allow her to create the wool, a similar but more specialized method as shape shifting. The MID power ratings are after all about WHAT the powers DO, not how they work as there are multiple ways to achieve similar effects. "shape shifting" would also explain why she can't reabsorb it as its dead matter, and how she removes it, because the follicles are not dead matter.

Yup, she's definitely not manifesting her wool via ectoplasm, but sometimes they just put a power into a category because it seems the closest fit, even if they have no idea how it actually works. Could be from her food, or if could me that she's tapping into some sort other form of energy to fuel it. There are several possibilities.
powers testing at the school is going to be interested because she doesn't use the common mechanism

True, there will probably be a few surprises when she gets tested at Whateley.

Marcel Belangier, 16, some of the seasonal migrant workers, tourists from France traveling across New Zealand, uh oh. Only with them for 2 months, yet struck straight at this poor girl's heart. Oh crud, treating her like that, he planned to sleep with her and never come back, what a creep. Gone 3 days later, ugh. Only animals for friendship and kindness, this girl deserved a lot more than what her parents gave.
Crap! Marcel left her pregnant. Okay, the more I hear about how her parents treated her the more I hope she gets away from them alive. Dr. Rosenthal seems like a nice doctor. Too bad this poor girl has parents who care more about their reputations than her health or the health of the child growing inside her.
*snarls* Her parents sicken me, talking about what people at their church will think, not caring they aren't acting how good Christians should to their own daughter. An abortion, even Dr. Rosenthal advised her to get one as she probably wouldn't survive trying to carry to term. Oof, she wants to have the baby and be the kind of parent to them she wishes her parents had been to her. Not bringing her to church, ugh. No, that last sentence, what happened?
Yikes, not able to keep food down now, this is bad. Linda and her fiance Dave from Canada, working on the farm for extra cash. 8 months pregnant now and at least Linda is a good person to chat with. Cold and itchy since she woke up this morning, uh oh. Linda has a concerned look on her face, just how bad off is this poor girl right now?Shepherd Farmstead

Dang, still not sure if everything with Marcel was all an act or not. Kid, a good person worries about others even if they aren't related especially if they look sick or bad off. Ouch, never loved Marcel, just the idea he represented, her parents have messed her up. Rae, the baby, is going to be a girl, please don't let this end in tragedy.
No! That kind of pain, please don't let it be a miscarriage. Her parents have kept her isolated for this long, they are monsters!
Heh, Linda has got this girl's parents pegged.“Because I’m here, and it looks like your parents are assholes who don’t give a shit about you,” she replied as she cast a dark look in the general direction of the kitchen downstairs.
Supplies ready, time to rush to the hospital. An unfinished blankie, please don't be an omen. Puts on a wool jumper and stops itching, definitely a sign of things to come. A medical center, such a small town to not have a hospital. Of course, Linda is pissed about how the parents treat this poor girl, I am as well. Dang, the poor kid is used to it.
At the hospital Mary is being told one last push, hazy voices around her. Mary, so help me if her daughter is born with wool on her I will be annoyed at the Mary had a little lamb joke. 30 hours of labor, yikes. 12 hours ago, her temperature rose, and screams about her eyes, great, she manifested further while in labor and might have gone into burnout. That last sentence, no, stillborn. After all she went through only to lose her daughter like this.Fairlie Medical Center

Knackered and aching, slept for quite a while, and was on an IV probably for fluids. Her hair is white and whispy now, as if losing her daughter isn't enough now she gets to find out she is a mutant with GSD starting to manifest. Dr. Mōkena, a Maori man shows up, the doctor on her case. Manifested during labor confirmed and the first mutant in their small town he knows of.
Mary asks where Rae is, her daughter, only to be told Rae didn't survive. In shock and yells that he is lying saying to bring her her baby. Call for nurses, Mary tries to get up but Dr. Mōkena pins her down. She resists and it takes 3 people to hold her down, then they sedate her as she cries out for her baby. God, this is heartbreaking.
Strapped to the bed, Mary doesn't feel like getting up, the loss of Rae was too much, and she never even got to hold her. The pain Mary is in, I would be afraid she would try to kill herself right now as well. She is planning to kill herself and make it look like an accident when she gets home, no!
Okay, her mother needs to die after saying that about Mary and Rae. Talking this way to Mary after she lost her baby, her mother is a true monster. Mary talks back and gets slapped, someone dragged this monster out of the hospital already. And her mother is an idiot, thinking you can catch being a mutant from someone.
A pretty government lady shows up with a frown on her face, I hope the frown is for what Mary's parents have done. Just finished speaking with Mary's mom, okay, I would be frowning after that. Agent Wolfe with the MCO, please be one of the good ones. Given until the end of the month to go to the Christchurch MCO office for powers testing, not even a whole month to recover. Gives Mary a card and leaves with an unhappy glance at Mary, this better not be because she is a mutant with GSD or some stupid reason.
Kept for a week in the medical center, they better have treated her well. White hair, blue eyes like a sheep, pain in ears indicate shifting to more like a sheep, pain in tailbone means she is most likely going to have a sheep's tail. Bigger breasts than the milk should account for, eep.Fairlie, New Zealand

Dr. Cavanah is a dense idiot who tells platitudes and doesn't know her home life or what her parents are like. Mary, you are not a monster no matter what, it is your actions and how you treat others that matter. Her Da complained about cremating Rae's body, I seriously wish I could deck him one. They said that to a grieving mother who lost her daughter! *restrains self from trying to get at Mary's parents through monitor*
I can't even call her parents monsters anymore, I think even monsters would care for and treat their children better than these two. Having kids just to help on the farm and take it over when they get older, treating kids like workers instead of family sickens me. At least the man doing the cremation is kind and shows compassion to Mary, Rae's ashes in a baby bottle, are all she has of her little girl.
15th birthday passes and Mary hasn't tried to kill herself, good. Oh god, Mary needs help and fast, she is in a spiral and needs to get away from her parents. Plus why are her breasts still producing milk, please say that isn't a part of her mutation. Feels like she belongs among the sheep especially when wearing a wool jumper. Feeling healthy and fit, improved health physically.Shepherd Farmstead

She is filling out a figure like that, but is stuck at just under 4'6", clothes shopping is going to be a pain. 3 new sets of clothes, I hope she doesn't outgrow them.
I wish I could tell her it will get better, I hope it will for her. Mary talking to Rae's ashes, I have a bad feeling Mary's parents are going to do something to them.If their God was cruel or uncaring enough to put me through all of this and take away the only thing that might have made my life worth living, then I would be better off believing in nothing at all.
A fast food meal and rushed to eat it by Ma, has to eat something before testing. Ouch, a hell of a way to find out you are a vegetarian due to your mutation. Red meat feels wrong, chicken nuggets feel wrong, that sucks. Her parents threatened to do that to Rae's ashes, end them.Christchurch, New Zealand

Why did Mary freeze upon seeing Agent Wolfe and the other woman by the front desk? Wolfe, please do something about Mary's Ma. Agent Wolfe frowned again, please be because of Ma's behavior. Diana is the other woman and is there to answer questions if Ma has any, Bill is doing the testing for Mary today.
Angelica Shepard, so that is the name of Mary's birth giver. Calls Mary a curse since the day she was born, please, someone end this creature disguised as a human already. Thinks those things about Mary. Easy, stomach, hold it in. Cares more about the gossip at church than her own daughter's well-being or feelings, arrggh.
They have been pocketing the Child Disability Allowance for their own nest egg instead of using it to help Mary, I can't help imagining them as squat trolls now. Wants disability money to steal, and only came to this appointment because of an implied threat by Wolfe. Goes outside and a woman named Gabrielle from M.A.M.A. aka Mothers Against Mutant Aberrations gives her a pamphlet, sickening how many hate groups there are.
*eyes bug out* This hate group should be arrested on sight, this manifesto is a call to murder mutant children to save their "souls". An anti-mutant hate group founded by nutbars feeding on fear and misinformation. They are a local group version of H1! and even now Angelica is plotting with them to murder Mary. I hope this sick group gets caught and tried.
Why is Agent Wolfe frowning while watching Mary, what are the hidden tests designed to suss out? Ah, it sounds like she knows Mary's parents are abusive and negligent and wants proof she can use against them in a court of law. Yay, Lauren Wolfe is one of the good MCO agents who look out for mutants and kids.
A call to Jimmy and Lauren wishes to make Mary disappear and get her safely away from her parents. I hope Jimmy comes in before M.A.M.A.'s attempt on Mary's life. 'More comprehensive testing in Aukland', I hope it works.
Covered almost head to toe in a thick layer of wool, well, she won't have to worry about cold winters as much now. Manifest wool from her body, but has to shear and shave it off, oof. Stuck in the bodysuit for now, aww. Exemplar 2, Manifestor 3, Avatar 1. Dang, angry at the spirit who inhabits her hallow for what happened to Rae, for manifesting. Please stop saying you are okay when you aren't, Mary. It hurts to watch.Mutant Commission Office

Mary, she isn't frowning because of you. Oh no, the testing in Aukland is in the future, not immediate, so the M.A.M.A. trap is still going to happen. Oh, good, Mary heard the last part of the conversation and knows what her mom and M.A.M.A. are planning for her. Mary, no, you should have gone back into the MCO office and told what you overheard to Agent Wolfe. Sneaking off is only going to get you hunted.
On the run and lost in a big city, Mary ends up in another alley and a man demands to know what she is doing there. On the run again and twisting her ankle on a bit of loose stonework, the bottle with Rae's ashes sent flying, no! The bottle lands okay, and Mary is crying as she apologizes to Rae, this hurts to watch, someone find and help her!
Exhausted, hungry, and emotionally drained, Mary finds an unoccupied house for sale with a shed in the backyard to hide in. Mary, you don't wish to die especially not at the hands of your mother and the people she just met. A good reason to keep on living.
4 weeks living on the streets, please say someone is looking for her. Has to sleep in such a place, to live like this, please let Agent Wolfe find her. Her wool is thick and durable, shears can't cut it, yet she can pull it right off as one big mat, interesting. Control of where she manifests it on her body and how much, very handy. So a limit on how much in a short amount of time she can make.Christchurch, New Zealand

Her spirit feels sorrow and guilt which only feeds into Mary's negative feelings, darn. Still has to milk herself, producing more, and leaking constantly, her spirit needs to knock that off. Embarrassment is worth it if she can sell her wool and get some real food. Survival is what counts for now.
2 months now! Please, someone find her and get her off the streets and into a good situation. Sleeping in what appears to be an abandoned shop, some people show up and Mary is awake and ready for them. Why would a man with his looks and clothes be in a place like this? And what is with the girl's eyes, is she a mutant, or is that a side-effect of something else?Christchurch, New Zealand

The creep says this is his turf and Mary will have to earn her right to stay there like Shelly, the girl who is with him. A blow to the groin from someone Mary's height with EX-2 strength, that guy isn't getting up again anytime soon. Mary runs for it and once she stops running realizes she is right across the street from the MCO office. She starts to walk towards it, but a boy grabs her from behind and pulls her back. He calls it a Wolf's Den, saying it is the last place she wants to be looking like she does.
Oh boy, this kid had a friend whose sister manifested, a similar situation to Mary and got sent to Aukland and disappeared for her own safety. But he thinks Agent Wolfe just has the kids disappear without a reason or for their own good. He knows about the M.A.M.A. people.
Oh boy, this kid has issues. And vanishes in a puff of smoke. Great, Mary could have finally got the help she needed and this boy messed her up.“There’s three rules for people like us living on the streets, if you want to live for long. Rule one, avoid the MCO. Rule two, no friends or attachments. Rule three, don’t be predictable,” he recited as if it was something he repeated often.
Mary is on the run from people now, Benji and his people due to her encounter a month and a half ago. They used the fact she sold her wool to Mrs. Conners to figure out how to target her. Ouch! Benji needed surgery and talks in a higher register now. On the run multiple times over the past month because of him and his people, great. Lost duffle bag, breast pump, and clothes, but not Rae's ashes. Give Mary a break already, universe!Christchurch, New Zealand
Sunday December 16th, 2007
2:34 p.m.
The creeps came at her with guns this time, Benji and his friends need to be locked up. Yikes, her first period since she had Rae and no tampons, only her wool to use. Cornered in a dead-end alley, Benji closes in, and out of the sky drops Tikanga, a local superhero, a big Maori man. Bulletproof, can throw cars, and fly, we have a paragon type.
He rescued her and wants to have a talk now. No way off the rooftop and told to wait while Tikanga goes to talk to the police, heh.
Over an hour before Tikanga shows up back, those police can be chatty. The story of Mary's life growing up, oh boy, if he doesn't tell the authorities about M.A.M.A. or help do something about them I will be disappointed. Heh, I would be angry on your behalf, M.A.M.A. needs to be shut down and all members arrested.
Someone Mary needs to meet, a flight to a farmhouse with 2 dogs who eagerly greet Tikanga. Agent Wolfe, Tikanga took Mary to Agent Wolfe's place. Tikanga is Jimmy, I would have never guessed. Another Bridgette, who is this poor girl Lauren speaks of? Going to school in the States, Jimmy went to Whateley, which is a long-distance friendship for 4 or more years of their lives.
Oh, crud. Bridgette was the kid they didn't get to in time.
A good reason to do extra tests and get those kids out alive while they can. And now Mary knows why Lauren was frowning so much, Mary's parents are POS. Ooo, sponsor to go to Whateley, yay. After that, Agent Wolfe started looking more closely at her cases and keeping an eye out for any that might be abused or who might be in danger from their families because they manifested. Anyone who seemed to fit those criteria was given extra tests during their testing that would help to get a better read on their personality and general reactions to things like stress, raised voices, and abusive situations. I was sending up all of the red flags when Bill tested me, but even before that, she was almost certain that my parents were abusing me mentally and emotionally at the very least.
Surveillance footage caught the conversation Mom had with the M.A.M.A. agent, but Mary was long gone by the time Agent Wolfe was able to act on it. Hhm, who is the other girl from 2 years ago they rescued and sent to Whateley. Hehe, Jimmy's payment is a barbecue with a special sauce that Lauren makes for him, a good deal. These two make her feel like she has a family more than her parents did, aww.
Staying at Lauren's until she is set up at Whateley, I hope no more trouble comes their way until then. Well-off families and do what they love, I'm glad Jimmy and Lauren can do what they love and help people. That is some sponsorship to come with all that, electric breast pump is going to be much needed if her breasts don't stop producing. Mary, you grieve and mourn in your own time and own way, it is different for everyone.Wolfe Residence

A pink-haired girl who can open bright pink portals to teleport through, awesome. Callista, the first kid they helped disappear. Lauren is the mother/big sister that Mary always needed. Time to head off through a portal to a train station.
A great story that made me wish I could help Mary so many times. After Mary is off their farm drop a bomb on her parents, they are beyond monsters for the way they treat her. Blaming a baby for something she had no control over, blaming her for being small and sickly when it could have been caused by anything including the mother not getting the right nutrients while she was pregnant. Berating, belittling, and tearing her apart in any way or shape they could for anything she did or didn't do. I seriously couldn't hate them more.
It hurt to see Mary go through the pregnancy and lose Rae like that, and still, her parents treated her like shit over it. The powers testing, I'm so glad Agent Wolfe noticed the abuse and was acting on it, I only wish Mary had gone back into the MCO that first day and told them what she heard her mom and that agent of M.A.M.A. saying.
Seeing her survive on the streets, struggling, having to deal with some of the worst the world can throw at you in the form of Benji and his people. I wish no one ever had to deal with life like that.
I'm just glad after all that Jimmy found Mary and brought her to Lauren, got the misunderstanding sorted out, and things are turning around for Mary. I hope she can save up enough money for a memorial for Rae soon and that no idiots at Whateley mess with Rae's ashes. I can't wait to see more of Mary and hope she gets the help she needs from the counselors at Whateley.

He knows about the M.A.M.A. people.Oh boy, this kid has issues.

Oh, crud. Bridgette was the kid they didn't get to in time.A good reason to do extra tests and get those kids out alive while they can.

Thanks, as always, for your commentary, Dreamer. Rose suggested some of the broad strokes for a background when we were chatting about powers and stuff with some other authors and I mentioned wanting to make a sheep girl. I took that background and wanted to make the readers feel for her, so I made the parents as hateable as possible. I considered giving them redeeming qualities, but I wanted her to really hit rock bottom before finding people who actually care about her, so I went all in on the parents.
I cried a lot while writing this, especially with the scene with her losing the baby. I tried to make the reason for Wolfe frowning and being upset somewhat vague, as well as her phone conversation with Jimmy, leaning into the other form of MCO disappearances, but you were on to it right away
I wanted this to be a tragic story with a sliver at hope at the end, and I hope that came across well. Hopefully things will get better for her, and she'll get the help she needs at Whateley after such a dark beginning to her story. Domoviye figured he was gonna get the blame for this one when most of it was me with help and encouragement from Rosebunny, so he insisted that we put the disclaimer at the start.
*big hugs*

I find it rather ironic that my dragons, who technically really ARE monsters, have better family relationships than some of the humans...
no they aren't, monster is a group of behaviors, and your dragons aren't monsters.

They're big scaly sorta-lizard creatures with big teeth who breathe fire. What more do you need?
